CNN anchor Chris Cuomo played a larger role than previously known in defending his older brother and former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo against sexual harassment allegations, according to documents released Monday by New York’s attorney general.

  • Chris, the “Cuomo Prime Time” anchor, asked Andrew’s aide Melissa DeRosa to let him assist with defending his brother, records released by the New York Attorney General’s Office show: “Please let me help,” Chris wrote in a message.
  • Other documents illustrate how Chris helped draft statements for the governor and even used his connections at CNN and other media outlets to warn his brother’s camp about upcoming media reports.
  • DeRosa requested multiple times that Chris check on rumors of additional stories and accusers, and Chris told investigators he would reach out to his sources and other journalists to “see if they had heard of anybody else coming out,” according to CNBC.
  • Chris described the communication about incoming reports as “business-as-usual” during an interview with investigators.Chris previously said he acted as an unofficial advisor to his brother amid the allegations, which the anchor apologized for and called “a mistake” in May after the Washington Post reported Chris helped craft the governor's strategy in responding to sexual harrassment accusations.
  • CNN said the documents “deserve a through review and consideration” in a statement to Forbes, adding that the network will be “seeking additional clarity” about the content and how it relates to the company over the next few days.

In August, the CNN anchor said he never “made calls to the press about my brother’s situation,” or encouraged attacks on the women who came forward with harassment allegations. He said he stopped communicating with his brother’s aides in group meetings in May on CNN’s request.

Andrew Cuomo resigned in August after the New York State Attorney General’s Office released a report that found he sexually harrassed ‘multiple women’ and violated state and federal law. A total of 16 women accused him of harassment, most of whom worked in politics. He has denied the claims, saying the scandal was “politically motivated.” Chris Cuomo said he was banned by CNN from covering the accusations against his brother in March.
